What Is the Chinese Zodiac?

The Chinese zodiac (生肖, shēngxiào) is a 12-year cycle where each year is represented by an animal — Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Pig. Legend says the Jade Emperor chose these twelve in the order they finished a great river race.

Unlike Western astrology, the zodiac follows the lunar calendar. Your sign is determined by your birth year as counted from the lunar New Year — which falls between late January and mid-February. That's why two people born in the same Gregorian year can have different signs.

Each animal is also paired with one of the Five Elements (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water) in a 60-year rotation, giving every birth year a unique "element animal" such as a Fire Horse or Wood Rabbit.

2026: The Year of the Horse

2026 is the 丙午 (Bing-Wu) year — the Fire Horse. In Chinese metaphysics, each year's animal forms a relationship with the 12 signs through the Tai Sui (Grand Duke Jupiter) system: some signs enjoy harmony (六合 / 三合), while others face a clash (冲太岁) or should proceed with care. Below is how each sign fares in the Horse year.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is the Chinese zodiac sign determined?

Your sign is based on your birth year according to the lunar calendar, not January 1. The lunar New Year falls between late January and mid-February. If you were born before that year's lunar New Year, your sign belongs to the previous lunar year. This calculator handles that automatically.

What is my Chinese zodiac element?

Each zodiac year is also ruled by one of the Five Elements — Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, or Water — in a 60-year cycle. For example, 2026 is a Fire Horse year, while 2025 was a Wood Snake year. Your element adds a layer of personality nuance to your animal sign.

Is the 2026 zodiac fortune accurate?

The 2026 fortune is based on traditional relationships between the 12 animal signs and the Year of the Horse (Tai Sui). It offers themes and tendencies for reflection and entertainment — it is not a prediction of fixed events, and should never replace professional advice.

What is the difference between Chinese zodiac and BaZi?

The Chinese zodiac is just one branch of a much larger system. BaZi (Four Pillars of Destiny) uses your full birth date and time to build a detailed chart of eight characters across four pillars. Think of the zodiac as your chapter title, and BaZi as the whole book.
